US Department of State: International Day of Democracy
Washington, DC (STL.News) The US Secretary Of State, Michael R. Pompeo released the following statement:
In recognition of the International Day of Democracy on September 15, we reaffirm the properness of each citizen to require part within the processes of democratic self-governance. Democracies are accountable to their citizens. They respect the Rule of Law, protect lives and property, and respect the freedoms, dignity, and equality of each person.
Democracy remains the aspiration of individuals everywhere on the planet because each folk yearns to be free. From the time we are children, we instinctively assert our ability to self-govern, to form decisions that shape our lives. As citizens, we understand that we must be liberal to engage others in debates over the wisdom of the choices of leaders to whom we entrust the facility to protect our lives, our property, and our freedoms. And, as a citizenry, we all know we cannot go it alone. Democracies are inclusive communities of people who are liberal to work together to accomplish goals they need freely chosen, and that they flourish because freedom unlocks the skills and creativity of all.
Today, the planet reels from one of the best public health crises in time. Democracies, authoritarian governments, and dictatorships are equally questioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, but only democracies are liberal to debate openly the way to respond. Authoritarians of each stripe, meanwhile, remain faithful. Their first priority isn't public health, but the protection of their own power. They refuse to answer hard questions. They sow erroneous information, scapegoat vulnerable groups, expand mass surveillance, and suspend the rule of law. People endure when their leaders are liable only to themselves or to the parties they control.
Democracies, by contrast, thrive in times of adversity. Because of freedom of expression and therefore the equality of all persons before the law, citizens of democratic societies are ready to confront public health problems together. Individuals in democratic nations demand access to information in order that they will protect themselves et al. And societies that embrace equality before the law live out that belief by taking active steps to market the complete participation and protection of all people.
Democratic governance is way from perfect, but it certainly beats the alternatives. Democratic societies respect common man rights and are more tranquil, prosperous, and secure. We stand with people everywhere who seek to measure freely, safely, and with dignity under democratic governments.
