During the COVID-19 pandemic, on 10 August 2020, Mukherjee announced on Twitter that had tested positive tor COVID-19 prior to his surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain.

 

He was admitted to the hospital after accidentally slipping and falling in his bathroom.  He was on ventilator support and in critical condition at the Army's Research and Referral (R&R) hospital in Delhi.

 

On 13 August, the hospital reported that Mukherjee was in a state of deep coma after ne underwent a brain surgery, however, his vital parameters remained stable.

On 19 August, the Army's Research and Referral hospital said that the health condition of Mukherjee has declined as he had developed a lung infection.

 

 On 25 August, his renal parameters became "slightly deranged," with the condition worsening days later.

 

Mukherjee died on 31 August 2020, aged 84, which was confirmed by his son Abhijit Mukherjee via twitter. This came after a hospital confirming his health deterioration early in the day stating, he was in septic shock since a day earlier caused by the lung infection and was overseen by a team of specialists.

 

Condolences poured immediately from leaders across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ramnath Kovind, and Rahul Gandhi were among the earliest ones to convey condolences via Twitter.

 Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed his sorrow via a tweet, snaring his condolences to the government and people of India as well as the bereaved family members.

Central government announced 7-day state mourning between 31 August to 6 September, whereby the national flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings wherever it is flown regularly.
