Devotees of Krishna believe that on this day Lord Krishna killed the tyrannical king Narakasura. Immense joy spread among the public due to the killing of this atrocious monster and people full of happiness lit ghee lamps and with it Lakshmi and Dhanvantari appeared on the same day after churning the sea. According to Jain believers, the Nirvana Day of the twenty-fourth Tirthankar Mahavir Swami is also on Diwali.

Diwali festival is celebrated for five days. First of all, the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. Lord Dhanvantari is worshiped on this day. Buying new clothes and utensils on this day is considered auspicious. On the next day, Narak Chaturdashi is fasted and worshiped for Yamraj. Lord Krishna killed Narakasura on this day. We also know it as Chhoti Diwali.
Diwali is celebrated on the third day of Amavasya in which Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. The light of the lamps in the dark night of Amavasya makes the candles colorful. On the next day, Govardhan Puja is performed. In Govardhan Puja, Govardhan is made from dung and offered to him. After that, worship is done with Dhoop-deep. The festival ends with Bhaiya Dooj on the last day.
The reasons and methods of celebrating Diwali in every province or region are different, but this festival has been going on for many generations everywhere. People are very excited about Diwali. People clean every corner of their houses, wear new clothes. Gifts of sweets are distributed to each other, meet each other.
