Justice Markandey Katju has written to Prime Minister Modi on the ongoing deadlock between the farmers and the government over the three new agricultural laws of the central government. He has cautioned the farmers about the difficulties faced by the demonstrations and therefore has suggested them an idea to avoid this deadlock. Will the Prime Minister follow that trick?

Justice Markandey Katju

Respected Mr. Modi,

Talks between farmers' representatives and central government ministers have been inconclusive and the next one is scheduled on 5 December.

The government was considering some amendments, but the farmers were firm on their demand that the three laws that the government wants to implement should be repealed.

The farmer movement has now reached alarming heights and now everything is up to you because only you can resolve this deadlock.

Respectfully, I appeal to you to accept a middle path (to which I had also suggested earlier) that the three laws that the farmers are objecting to will remain, but will remain postponed. In future negotiations with farmers' organizations Appropriate amendments will be made to these laws, if accepted by the agreed formulas and parties, and only then will they apply.

This should be declared by you immediately. Not repealing these laws will not tarnish the face of your government, and not implementing them will also be a partial success for the farmers who are making this movement. Thus both sides will get partial success.

If this announcement is not made, I am afraid that the results and scenario in the near future will be something like this:

1. The agitating peasants, who are determined to continue their struggle, will block all roads leading to Delhi (some already blocked), causing great hardship and suffering to the people of Delhi and elsewhere.

2. The government naturally cannot and will not tolerate this situation for long, and will then order the police to disperse the agitators. Since the agitators will not voluntarily withdraw, the police will use force.

3. If this happens, it is inevitable that big movements will start soon in Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh, which will disturb the normal life of the people and will also react in other states where the support of farmers Many people will perform in.

4. The result of all this will be that chaos can spread in the whole country. The economy is already in a bad state and it will create an even worse situation which will cause immense pain and sorrow to the people. This will make China more angry against us Will get encouragement. (As suggested by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in his recent conversation with the Union Home Minister.) In these difficult circumstances, I appeal to the people of the country to announce the above suggestion immediately, and to remove the crisis of the public and the farmers.
