Technology, Internet and mobile gadgets are everywhere today, and with a click of a button you can find anything and everything. I use gadgets for almost everything - I pay bills online, I shop online, I order food from my mobile, when I use Google Maps extensively on wheels, I sometimes chat endlessly with friends - forgetting what is happening around me. It has definitely made my life a lot easier, but at the same time, I sometimes stop myself and question, am I using technology and gadgets !?

Yes, gadgets are everywhere - for entertainment, eating, shopping, navigation or even personal advice. It brings the whole world together, but don't you think it really creates a big wall within a house and family? With an effort to connect the whole world from the outside, we often break away from our own family. Not only this, gadgets often affect a person's physical and mental health, especially in children. It is time to stop and ponder, do we really own our smartphones and gadgets or are we SLAVES?

How does our addiction to these gadgets come out, and how can we reduce its use and in turn reduce its impact on your family?

Television:

These days, television is not the only channel that broadcasts news and movies and soaps, they have become "smart" like their smartphones. One can browse YouTube channels, watch movies on demand, stream music and do much more than just switching channels. Parents or grandparents in the family may be addicted to daily soap. Sometimes, parents turn on the television or fussy to stop their child's tantrums. Too much screen time can affect us, especially children in different ways. Symptoms like anxiety and irritability when they fail to watch their favorite programs. Insomnia close to screen time due to insomnia. In men, it can reduce sperm count. People addicted to television can become couch potatoes, as well as often get into the habit of overeating (mainly junk), affecting their overall health.

Smart phones and tablets:

Previously, a phone was only for making calls and sending SMS. But as the traditional phone gradually evolved into smartphones, it almost became our personal assistant. It does almost everything for us. Many people are adamant on this throughout the day, thus neglecting the family and the people around. Don't we sometimes spend more time on smartphones than necessary - is it for video browsing, or online shopping, or chatting with friends and relatives? Children carry our habits.

Therefore it becomes the responsibility of every adult in the family not to use mobiles or other gadgets excessively. Smartphone addiction, known as "nomophobia", is a growing problem in young children these days. It is feared to be beyond mobile phone or mobile connectivity. Some of the ways mobile phones can affect us are listed below: Anxiety, nervous breakdown, anger, especially when someone is unable to find their phone / use it for some reason, such as absence of signal, or low battery.

Too much screen time can cause insomnia or sleep disturbances. It increases loneliness and depression. It may seem that feelings like loneliness and boredom fly into the air by flowing into this new world, but this is only temporary. It can actually feel bad later. Mobile gadgets take you into a virtual world. The addiction of social media connection, dating apps, games and messaging can take you to the point where virtual, online friends become more important than real-life relationships. Some may go so deep that they may be unable to distinguish between real and virtual worlds.

It is known to reduce concentration, decision-making ability and problem-solving skills in students. It also reduces imagination and creativity among young minds.

Many times, looking at edited, polished and concocted pictures of their friends on Facebook or Instagram (which may not actually be real), the comparison kicks in and the kids feel the grass is always greener on the other side. It is important for innocent children to understand that photos shared on social media are usually taken at their best times. No one ever shares a picture of a crying baby in public or an uncapped room or a picture of their broken family for example. Others: If you really need devices like Wi-Fi powered lights or sound-capable gadgets, reconsider.

Many are actually upgrading their homes to "smart homes" with everything running on Wi-Fi. Most of the time, more than the actual need, we keep such gadgets to showcase our luxury and extravagance. To me, even a fitness watch is not really a necessity and only a fashion accessory. Try to use it if it really serves a purpose, Because WiFi and Blue-tooth themselves affect us in numerous ways. Certainly, there is no firm evidence that WiFi is the only culprit, and this is a controversial statement, but it is two extreme opinions when it comes to Wi-Fi. One side says that it is completely safe, while the other side blames Wi-Fi for headaches, fatigue, and even cancer. So, why not be cautious? As a precautionary step, use these tools only when you need them. Turn them off and keep away when not in use.

I have listed below some methods to stay away from gadgets. I am following myself for the betterment of my family:

  • Switch off Wi-Fi routers and all unneeded Bluetooth devices at night.
  • Turn off the TV and stay away from mobile phones at least 30 minutes before your bedtime.
  • When you go to bed try to keep your phone away from you. This improves the quality of your sleep. It is also commonly known to enhance the relationship between couples and the whole family.
  • It is important to set a time limit for yourself and your children. Your partner and the rest of the household should explain how screen time can affect growing children - both in terms of physical and mental health. Set rules, set deadlines and then learn to stick to them.
  • Instead of allowing your child to get accustomed to online games or digging into other mobile applications, invest in some good board games, puzzles and books. Make your child 'addicted' to reading. This is one of the best things for your children.
  • For all attempts to stay away from gadgets, encourage them to do something you like - such as an occasional movie or a party with friends - thus encouraging them to move in this direction. It is not possible to get rid of all gadgets completely.

But be informed of the harmful effects on you and your family. Set the rules at home on time on screen and make it a habit to turn off all gadgets before going to sleep. As parents, it is our responsibility to protect our family from the ill effects of gadgets and technology, and to use it only for productivity and wellbeing.
