12 years ago, on the night of November 26, 2008, 10 Pakistani-based terrorists launched coordinated shooting and bomb attacks in Mumbai at 5 major locations, killing 166 people and wounding more than 300. Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists attacked five prominent locations in the financial capital: Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Train Station, Nariman House Commercial and Residential Complex, Cama Hospital, Leopold Cafe, Oberoi-Trident Hotel and Hotel y Taj Tower.

The terrorists arrived in Bombay on a fishing trawler hijacked from a Pakistani port in Karachi. While nine terrorists were killed in the armed forces' four-day operation, the sole terrorist Ajmal Kasab was captured alive and sentenced to death at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune in 2012. The terrorists hijacked cars, including a police van, and divided into different groups to carry out the attacks. They used automatic weapons and grenades to storm the sites.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji term was the site of the first attack. Around 9:20 p.m. The attack lasted about 90 minutes, leaving 58 dead and more than 100 wounded. The second attack was reported about 8-10 minutes later at the Nariman House residential and commercial complex that houses the Chabad Lubavitch Jewish outreach center. Before attacking him, the terrorists blew up a gas station. Around 9.40pm, four terrorists attacked the exclusive and popular Leopold Cafe. They fired shots at the diners, killing 10 of them. The attack lasted between 10 and 15 minutes. The terrorists also placed bombs in two taxis that killed five people and injured approx fifteen people.

Then they proceed to the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel. They first attacked guests around the pool and then moved inside the bars and restaurants. Two of the terrorists entered the hotel through the front door and began firing and throwing grenades. They shoot as a minimum 31 individuals in this four-day siege. The terrorists detonated bombs under the central dome of the Taj Mahal hotel, causing a massive fire, which later tore through the upper floors of the Taj. The Oberoi-Trident hotel was targeted by two militants who entered the hotel through the restaurant and opened a gunshot into the crowd. Some 30 people were killed in a siege that lasted for three days.

After attacking the CST train station, Kasab and his fellow militant Ismail Khan attacked the Cama Hospital. They reached the back door of the hospital, but alert hospital staff had locked all the doors. The two men then ambushed a police team outside the hospital, killing six people, including ATS chief Hemant Karkare, and setting their jeep whereabouts. Kasab and another militant Ismail Khan were stopped near Girgaum Chowpatty, where police officer Tukaram Ombale grabbed the barrel of his rifle.

This gave the police team time to overcome Kasab and capture him.The other terrorist died. Kasab was sentenced to death and executed by hanging on November 21, 2012, and buried in Yerwada Prison in Pune.
