Then you too will become immortal.

The Story of Immortality or Amar Katha Is The Essence Of Shivratri

The Amar Katha in the Path of Devotion or Bhakti

The Amar Katha says at the end of the Iron Age, Mother Parvati asked Shivaji to let her know why and when He started wearing the beads of heads (Mund Mala). Shivaji replied whenever you are born, I add one more head in my beads. Maa Parvati said, "My Lord, my body is destroyed every time and I die again and again, but you are Immortal. Please let me know the secret of immortality" to which Shivji replied that it is due to Amar Katha.Maa Parvati insisted that she be told this immortal secret, but Shivaji continued postponing this request. Finally, on consistent demand from Maa Parvati, He made up his mind to tell the immortal secret. He searched for an isolated place where no other living being could listen to it. He finally chose the Amarnath Cave at Mt Kailaish as the legend relates.

In preparation for this auspicious event, He left His Nandi (the bull which is His vehicle of transportation) at Pahalgam (Bail Gaon). At Chandanwari, He released Moon from his hairs (Jataon). At the banks of Lake Sheshnag, He released the snakes. He decided to leave his Son Ganesha at Mahagunas Parvat (Mahaganesh Hill). At Panjtarni, Shivji left the Five Elements of earth, water, air, fire and sky behind. He is the Lord of these elements. This was the practice of detachment.

It is believed that as a symbol of sacrificing and renunciation of the earthly world, Shivaji and Maa Parvati performed the Tandava Dance. After leaving behind all attachments including His son, Shivaji entered the Holy Amarnath Cave along with Mother Parvati. Lord Shiva then went into deep "Samadhi" through the practice of concentration, seated on a deer skin. To ensure that no living being was able to hear this Immortal Story, He created Rudra named Kalagni and ordered him to spread fire to eliminate every living thing in and around the Holy Cave.

After this He started narrating the secret of immortality to Maa Parvati. But as a matter of chance, a pair of pigeons was born from a hidden egg under the deer skin. The pigeons became immortal having listened to the secret of immortality. On one occasion, Shivji questioned Parbati about falling asleep, but she quickly retorted that she concentrated better with her eyes closed.

The Amar Katha in the Path of Knowledge or Gyan

The "Immortal Secret" as related to Maa Parbatiji on Mt Kailaish is but the knowledge of the Shrimad Bhagavad. The Shrimat Bhagavad Gita is the only authentic Hindu Scripture written in the first person as direct versions of God. All other scriptures are written in the third person in praise of God. This makes the Gita the "Mother of all Scriptures".

This supreme secret in the form of the immortal story has deep significance to the" code of ethics" for humanity in the form of the Shrimat Bhagavad Gita. In Ramayan, the line, which was drawn by Lakshman to encircle Sita, is but the code of ethics as enshrined in the Gita and called "Sanatan Dharma". As long as Sita remained within that circle, she was protected from evil, but once she stepped out for the symbolic "material golden deer", she fell under the rule of Rawan.

This goes for all souls who step outside the code of ethics of "Sanatan Dharma". They become "bodyconscious" and forget about their immortality and are then subjected to the consciousness of birth and death. The awareness and fear of "death" is only for those who have forgotten that they are souls.

For those who are "soulconscious" and have the realization that they are souls and not this body, they have the consciousness that they are "immortal beings". They are not aware of the "concept of death" and taking rebirth to them is similar to changing their "dress and address". This is what is meant by immortality and the story of the "Amar Katha".

Gita relates the Immortal Yoga and Supreme Secrets

The "immortal secret" mentioned in the Amar Katha is explained in Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. In c4v1, Sri Bhagavan said: "I taught this Immortal Yoga to Vivaswan (Sun God); Vivaswan conveyed it to Manu, his son, and Manu imparted to his son Ikswaku".

C4v2 says "Thus handed down from father to son, Arjuna, this Yoga remained known to the Royal Sages and Raj Rishis. By great efflux of time, however, it has more or less disappeared".

C4v3 says 'This same ancient Yoga has this day been imparted to you by Me, because you are My devotee and Friend, and also because this is a "Supreme Secret". … c4v6 Though unborn and immortal, and also Lord of all beings, I manifest Myself through my own Yogamaya (divine potency), keeping My nature (Prakriti) under control".

C4v7 says "Arjuna, whenever there is a decline of righteousness, and unrighteousness is in ascendant, then I body myself forth".

C4v8 says "For the protection of the virtuous, for the destruction of the evil-doers, and for establishing Dharma (righteousness) on a firm footing, I am born from age to age".

C9v2 says "This knowledge (of both Nirguna Brahma and Saguna aspects of divinity) is a sovereign science, a sovereign secret supremely holy, most excellent, directly enjoyable, attended with virtue, very easy to practice and imperishable".

C2v20 says "The soul is never born" nor does it exist on coming into being. For it is unborn, eternal, everlasting, primeval; even though the body is slain, the soul is not". C2v2 says "As a man discarding worn-out clothes, takes other new ones, likewise the embodied soul, casting of worn-out bodies, enters into others which are new". C2v23-24 says "Weapons cannot cut it nor can fire burn it; water cannot drench it nor can wind make it dry. For the soul is incapable of being cut; it is proof against fire, impervious to water and undriable as a well. This soul is eternal, omnipresent, immovable, constant and everlasting.

Shiva in Samadhi and Concentration before the Story

This refers to the yoga and meditation. Meditation is the art of perfect unlimited concentration whereas Samadhi is science of deep and intense yoga with God. To reach this stage one must be detached from the influence and attraction of this world. One must have sovereignty over the five senses, the five elements and the five vices. This is the reason Shivaji detached Himself from everything including His son. The deerskin is only symbolic of the conquest, sovereignty and stability of the mind. The "kalagni" ordered by Shivji is but the "intense fire of yoga" that is required to burn the negative or tamoguni sanskars, impure tendencies or bad habits of the soul. To eliminate every living thing by fire around the Holy Cave is not to physically destroy the biological environment but rather the power of detachment from this mundane world and the freedom from the bondage of desires. This is the principle called "vairag" when there is no motive for the fruit of actions as well as attachment to the action, be it good or bad. This is summed up in Gita c5 where Arjuna asks God to explain which one is superior, the "yoga of knowledge" or the "yoga of action". God replies in c18v6, "Therefore, Arjuna, My considered and best opinion is that these acts of sacrifice, gift, penance, and all other duties must be performed relinquishing attachment and fruit', which is the qualities and attributes of a "karma yogi".

The Time to Relate the Story of Immortality is fixed in the Cycle

It must be noted that that the story says that Shivji kept continually postponing the decision to tell the story of immortality. This reason is clear from Gita c4v7-8 where God says he comes at a specific time and that is "when unrighteousness is in ascendant and his task is to protect the virtuous, destroy the evil and re-establish dharma". This refers to an era at the end of the Iron Age which is also the end of the cycle or kalpa. This era is called the "auspicious confluence age" and mentioned in the Gita as "Purushottam Samgam Yuga". It is written, "the fruit of devotion is knowledge" where the fruit is but the knowledge of the Gita. This knowledge enables one to attain the elevated stage of a karma yogi through observance of "vairag". Gita explains how to attain liberation as well as liberation in life through the method of manmannabhav and madhyajibhav and the knowledge of gyan and vigyan.

Immortality, Death and the Eternal Cycle

Immortality is to experience a "life of liberation' also called "jivanmukti" in the golden and silver ages. Here one always has the consciousness that he is a soul and not the body. Death is experienced when one has forgotten that he is a soul and believes he is the body. Here death is painful and it causes immense sorrow because of the attachment to the physical world. Death is a concept and consciousness of the copper and iron ages. The Gita explains immortality and death as follows.

C9v1: "To you, who are devoid of the carping spirit, I shall now unfold the knowledge of Nirguna Brahma along with the knowledge of Sakara Brahma, knowing which you will be freed from the evil of worldly existence. C9v2: Arjuna, people having no faith in this Dharma, failing to reach Me, revolves in the paths of the world of death (copper and iron ages).

C9v4: All this is permeated by Me in My unmanifest aspect, and all beings abide in the idea within Me. Therefore, really speaking, I am not in them. C9v5: Nay, those beings abide not in Me; but look at the wonderful power of my divine Yoga, though the sustainer and Creator of beings, my self in reality dwells not in those beings.

C9 v7: Arjuna, at the end of every kalpa, all being enter My Prakriti (the Prime Cause), and at the beginning of every kalpa, I bring them forth again.

C9v8: Laying hold of My Nature, I bring forth again and again, (according to their respective karma) this whole multitude of beings subject to the influence of their own nature. C9v10: Arjuna, with Me as supervisor, Nature brings forth the whole creation, both animate and inanimate, it is due to this that the wheel of Samsara is revolving.

Parbati's Slumber during the Amar Katha

The significance of Maa Parbati falling asleep during the Amar Katha is that when God descends on earth as in Gita c4v7-8, people would be in the "deep sleep of ignorance" or "Kumbhakaran" and would not be able to recognize Him. This is why it is said that the "Incarnation" would receive great defamation when he comes. It is said that the last prophet to come to give salvation would be called the "Kalki Avatar". The word "Kalki" means defamation. Therefore, when God comes in the form of an incarnation, people would ignore His message, as they would be in the deep sleep of ignorance covered under the veil of anger, greed, ego, lust and attachment. However when God comes, He gives the injection of knowledge to all "Parbati's" to dispel the darkness of ignorance, but only few would be awake (jagraan).

Shiva's Cosmic Dance also called Nataraja

One of the most enduring symbols of India is the figure of Naturaja, Shiva, the King of Dancers. Shiva fills the whole cosmos with his joyful dance called "tandava". Tandava represents five activities called shrishti or creation, sthiti or preservation, samhara or destruction, tirobhava or illusion and anugraha or salvation. When churned carefully, one will notice that the first three activities are the three divine acts of Trimurti God Shiva called of Brahma, Vishnu and Shankar, the creator, sustainer and transformer. Therefore, Shiva's cosmic dance is believed to encompass creation, preservation, and destruction in order to destroy the illusion of maya to grant salavation or Jivan Mukti. This idea has been embedded in Hindu thought and ritual since the dawn of civilization.

In the path of knowledge, Nataraja is the conquest of light over darkness by the imbibing and inculcating the knowledge of the Gita. Therefore, firstly, the purification of all souls with the dance of "knowledge of the Gita" is the subtle part of the "dance of Shiva". Secondly the cooperation of the elements to cleanse themselves through floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and fire are the physical part of the "dance of Shiva", called Nataraja or the cosmic dance. Nataraja, therefore is the dance of knowledge for the transformation to a pure world and the re-establishment of Dharma.

The Soul is Spiritual, Eternal and Immortal

It is very common to hear people say that when they have taken care of all the mundane things of life and are quite comfortable after completion of family responsibilities that they will retire to a religious life to become more spiritual. This is almost an established belief and practice where people believe in the stages of Brahmchari, Grihasti, Vanprasa and Sanyassa according to increments of 20 years for each. Humanity has completely forgotten that it is the soul that utilizes the body to perform actions.

Man is now body conscious being trapped in a materialism and has completely forgotten his origin and now believes that it is the body that controls the soul. The soul is however spiritual in essence and it is eternal and immortal. Therefore, how can we aspire to become what we are already? Our aspirations should be to become better and perfect human beings rather to become what we are eternally in essence, eternal, spiritual and immortal souls.
