Trader-turned-industrialist, he founded the group in 1988 as commodities trading outfit. Expanded into energy, and infrastructure. His Mundra Port on India's West coast is country's biggest in the private sector. His networking skills are excellent, even with Narendra Modi, because of his entrepreneurial success. His wife, Priti, oversees schools managed by the Adani Foundation, the family's charitable arm.

Gautam offered $315 million for IPL Season IV but lost to the Kochi team whose bid was $333 million. After the results were out, he decided to forget all about the IPL! Good for him and his stake holders. The current downturn did not alter his vision and he started focusing more on the big and basic infrastructure. That is power generation. He invested Rs. 28000 crore! He won competitive bids for power supply to Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra under long-term power purchase agreement. He raised Rs.300 crore through IPO in August 2009 which was oversubscribed by 18 times. Which shows the strength of the brand name Adani.

He was born in 19 6 2 in Ahmedabad. He had seven siblings. In search of a livelihood, his parents migrated to Northern Gujarat. He ca me to Mumbai with only a few hundred rupees at the young age of 18. He finished his studies-school and college upto two years and he was a dropout.

He started his career as a diamond sorter. Then he set up his own diamond brokerage outfit at Zaveri Bazaar. In 1981 his elder brother asked him to buy a plastics unit in Ahmedabad. This was the beginning of Adani's venture into global trading by beginning to import PVC which is a key raw material for manufacturing plastics. Now he owns two private jets, which were purchased in 2005 and 2007. Think over it: how titans are emerging on our soil and all similar successes are "made in India", the Indian way.
