Have You Received An Emergency Alert On Your Phone Today?

New Delhi: India tested its emergency alert system by sending test flashes to several smartphones. Users heard a loud beep along with an 'Emergency Alert: Critical' flash on their phones.

"This is a sample test message sent through the Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. Please ignore this message as no action is required on your part. This message is being implemented by Test Pan-India Emergency Alert System National Disaster Management Authority. Its objective is to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies," read the flash message.

Cell Broadcasting System of the Department of Telecommunications said such tests will be conducted in different areas from time to time to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency alert broadcasting capabilities of mobile operators and cell broadcasting systems.

The government is working with the National Disaster Management Authority to better prepare for disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and floods.
